I hate snakes. Now I can't look at your blog again till the snake picture is gone! I'll have to be super fast with the mouse and click away when the pic is half loaded.
I don't THINK it's a copperhead. I searched online for pics, & this does NOT look quite like what I saw. HOWEVER, I have emailed this link to three people who I believe are likely to be able to give me a definite answer on this.
What is TRUE, is that I live in copperhead territory, so whether or not this particular snake is a copperhead, I STILL am going to treat ALL snakes as if they are poisonous. Since snakes scare me ANYWAY, that's no problem.
BOOTS, GLOVES and a WATCHFUL EYE. And carry a big stick? (RAKE. SHOVEL.)
I don't think it's a copperhead because it lacks the diamond-shaped head of the pit viper family. The color doesn't look right because the dark patches are biggest on the top instead of the sides but color can be variable.
Was it small? Because:
Baby copperheads up to a year or so in age may be easily identified by the presence of a bright yellowish-green tail tip, an adaptation that is used by the young snakes to procure their food. From: http://wildwnc.org/af/northerncopperhead.html
You probably would have noticed a bright yellow tail.
* Life is change.
** Born in New Jersey. (A Jersey Girl, but I don't know "What Exit".) I went to college in Iowa. (NOT in a cornfield, but close.) I was a New Yorker. The proverbial Struggling Actor in Manhattan, and surviving pretty well for 20-something-ish years (I *heart* New York.)
*** Now I live below the Mason-Dixon line. (But I'm born and bred a YANKEE.)
***For awhile, I was an avid-almost-rabid runner, running WITH my camera much of the time. I have been experiencing some "aging ? and other issues", but I still doggedly clod-hoppily-plod my way through events, camera usually in hand. Now I'm even SLOWER than I used to be. *** :-P ***
** I used to help socialize local humane society cats in their foster home, and take photos for the website, but my Haven kitties moved to a farm in Virginia in May 2018. ~meow~
Awaiting my next incarnation, or not....***
I still have a phondness for photography & a recurring Flickr Addiction, so go see my photos!

Whoa. Give me turtles anyday. Is there such a thing as a snake repellent you can get for your yard?

Be careful, I think it's better you run with a gun instead of a camera!
EEEEP! I would have left the camera with the snake... see ya! I've been known to walk the outside of the fence when I spot worms in the garden. Ick.
